How to pray for your husband: what to pray, with verses

To pray for your husband, pray for him by name, about the real things in his life: his walk with God, his work, his health, his temptations, his friendships, and his role at home. Use a Bible verse as your words when yours run out, ask him what he'd like you to pray, and keep at it a little every day rather than a lot once in a while. Prayer for a husband works best when it is specific, honest about your own heart, and free of a hidden list of things you want God to fix in him.

Below: why it matters, a 5-minute way to pray for him, ten areas with a verse and a short prayer for each, a 7-day plan, how to pray together, what to pray in hard seasons, and mistakes to avoid.

Why pray for your husband?

Marriage is meant to be a partnership with God in the middle of it. "If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken" (Ecclesiastes 4:12, WEB). Praying for your husband is one of the ways you pull on that cord. No one knows his pressures, moods and hopes as closely as you do, so few people can pray for him as specifically.

It also changes you. It is hard to stay cold toward someone you bring to God every morning with gratitude. Many wives say that praying for their husband softened their own hearts first. And Scripture invites every need to God: "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6, WEB). Your worries about him belong there too.

How to pray for your husband in 5 minutes

This is the same simple shape we use for praying for anyone, fitted to a husband.

  1. Thank God for him (1 minute). One specific thing: the way he greets the kids, that he fixed the sink, that he stayed with you through a hard year. Thanks first keeps the prayer from turning into a complaint.
  2. Pray for his heart (1 minute). His faith, his peace, his walk with God. This matters more than anything else on the list.
  3. Pray for today (1 minute). The meeting, the drive, the doctor's visit, the hard conversation with his brother. Whatever you know is in his day.
  4. Pray for one area of his life (1 minute). Rotate through the ten below, one a day.
  5. Pray for your own part (1 minute). Patience, kind words, and the wisdom to know when to speak and when to pray instead.

That's it. Five minutes, most days, adds up to hours of prayer for him over a year. If five minutes feels hard to keep, our guide on how to have a consistent prayer life shows how to tie prayer to something you already do every day.

10 things to pray for your husband, with verses

Each area has a verse and a short prayer. Put his name where you see [name].

1. His relationship with God

"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." James 4:8 (WEB)

Pray: "Father, draw [name] close to you. Give him a hunger for your Word and a real friendship with Jesus, not just habits. Let his faith be his own."

2. His work

"And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men." Colossians 3:23 (WEB)

Pray: "Bless [name]'s work today. Give him good ideas, fair bosses, honest coworkers and a sense that what he does matters to you. Keep him from bringing the weight of it home."

3. His wisdom and decisions

"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him." James 1:5 (WEB)

Pray: "[name] has a decision to make about [the job, the house, his parents]. Give him wisdom, a clear mind, and peace about the right choice. Help us decide together."

4. His health and safety

"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers." 3 John 2 (WEB)

Pray: "Keep [name] safe on the road and at work. Give his body strength and rest. Help him take care of himself and see a doctor when he needs to."

5. His mind and emotions

"Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 (WEB)

Pray: "You see the stress [name] doesn't talk about. Lift it. Give him rest, quiet his worries, and give him someone he can be honest with."

Many men carry stress quietly. If your husband seems low for weeks, has lost interest in things he loved, or talks about not wanting to be here, pray, and also encourage him to see a doctor or counselor. If he is in danger, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or 911.

6. His purity and strength against temptation

"God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape." 1 Corinthians 10:13 (WEB)

Pray: "Guard [name]'s eyes, mind and heart. When temptation comes, show him the way out and give him the strength to take it. Keep our marriage bed honored."

7. His friendships

"Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend's countenance." Proverbs 27:17 (WEB)

Pray: "Give [name] good friends: men who love you, who tell him the truth, and who make him better. Bring the right man across his path this month."

8. His role as a father

"You fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4 (WEB)

Pray: "Give [name] patience with the kids, joy in them, and time with each one. Help him show them what you're like." For the children themselves, see our guide on how to pray for your children.

9. His love for you and your marriage

"Love is patient and is kind; love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag, is not proud." 1 Corinthians 13:4 (WEB)

Pray: "Grow our love. Make us patient and kind with each other, quick to forgive, slow to keep score. Help us like each other, not only love each other."

10. His time and priorities

"So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12 (WEB)

Pray: "Help [name] spend his time on what matters. Give him rest from the phone and the inbox, and time for you, for us, and for himself."

A 7-day plan to pray for your husband

A full prayer for your husband

Here is a complete prayer you can read as it is, or use as a pattern for your own. It takes about two minutes aloud.

"Father, thank you for [name]. Thank you for the man he is and for the years you've given us. You know him better than I do, every worry he hasn't told me and every hope he's carrying. Draw him close to you today. Let his faith be real and growing.

Bless his work. Give him wisdom in his decisions and strength for what's hard. Keep him safe and healthy. When he's tired, give him rest; when he's tempted, give him a way out; when he's discouraged, send him a friend.

Make him a patient, joyful father and a loving husband, and make me a patient, kind wife. Forgive me for the times I've tried to change him by nagging instead of praying. Help us forgive quickly and laugh often. Build our home, Lord, because unless you build it, we labor in vain. I give him to you. In Jesus' name, amen."

The last line echoes Psalm 127:1: "Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it" (WEB).

How to pray with your husband

Praying for him on your own is good. Praying together can draw you closer than almost anything else, and Jesus promised to be present when two pray in his name: "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them" (Matthew 18:20, WEB). It can also feel awkward at first, especially if one of you is quieter about faith. A few ways in:

What to pray for your husband in hard seasons

Most lists assume everything is fine. These are for the weeks when it isn't.

SeasonWhat to prayA verse to lean on
He lost his job or money is tightProvision, a clear next step, freedom from shame, and that his worth stays in God, not his paycheckMatthew 6:31-33
He's stressed or burned outRest, a lighter load, honest words with you, and help from othersMatthew 11:28
He's sick or facing surgeryHealing, wise doctors, courage, and rest for you bothJames 5:14-15
You're in conflictSofter hearts on both sides, the right words, humility to go firstEphesians 4:26, 32
He's struggling with an addictionHonesty, the help he needs, freedom, and wisdom for you to set healthy limitsJohn 8:36
He's drifted from GodThat he finds his way back, a friend who walks with him, patience for youLuke 15:20
He isn't a believerOpen eyes, a soft heart, believing friends, and that your life speaks for you1 Peter 3:1; Ephesians 1:18
Grief (a parent died, a loss)Comfort, time to grieve, people who sit with himPsalm 34:18

When he's sick, our guide on how to pray for someone who is sick has prayers for each stage of an illness, and for the person caring for them, which may be you.

When your husband isn't a Christian. Peter wrote to wives in exactly this place, saying a husband may be "won by the behavior of" his wife "without a word" (1 Peter 3:1, WEB). That doesn't mean silence about your faith forever; it means your love, peace and kindness often speak first. Pray for him daily, pray for chances to talk, and don't treat him as a project. Many wives pray for years. Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow so that we "must always pray and not give up" (Luke 18:1, WEB).

When you're angry with him. Start honest: "Lord, I'm hurt and I don't feel like praying for him." Then pray one good thing for him anyway, and ask for help with your own heart. "Don't let the sun go down on your wrath" (Ephesians 4:26, WEB) doesn't mean every fight ends by bedtime, but prayer before sleep keeps anger from settling in.

If you're not safe

Praying for your husband never means staying in danger. If he hits you, threatens you, controls your money or your movements, or you're afraid of him, prayer is not a reason to stay quiet. You can keep praying for him from a safe place. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline answers 24 hours a day at 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. In an emergency, call 911. A trusted pastor or counselor can also help you make a plan.

Mistakes to avoid

Common questions

What is a good short prayer for my husband?

"Lord, thank you for [name]. Draw him close to you, give him wisdom and strength for today, keep him safe, and help me love him well. Amen." It takes 15 seconds and covers his faith, his day and your marriage.

How often should I pray for my husband?

Daily is a good aim, even if it's one minute. A short prayer most days does more than a long one once a month. A weekly plan like the one above keeps it from feeling repetitive.

Should I tell my husband I'm praying for him?

Usually, yes, kindly and simply: "I prayed for your interview this morning." Most men are quietly encouraged by it. Asking him "What can I pray for?" is even better, because it lets him set the topic.

What Bible verse can I pray over my husband?

Ephesians 3:16-17 is a good one to start with: that God would strengthen him "with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in" his heart "through faith" (WEB). The ten verses above, one for each area of his life, are a good set to rotate through.

How do I pray for my husband when I'm angry at him?

Be honest with God about the anger, pray one good thing for him anyway, and ask God to work on your heart too. Over time, the praying often softens the anger. If the hurt is deep or keeps returning, a pastor or Christian counselor can help you both.

Can I pray for my future husband?

Yes. Many single women pray for a future spouse: that he grows in faith, that God prepares both of you, and for wisdom and patience in the meantime. The same ten areas above work for a man you haven't met yet.
