Prayer when feeling overwhelmed: what to pray, and how to sort the load

When you're overwhelmed, pray short and honest: "Lord, it's too much. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I." That line is from Psalm 61:2, written by someone whose "heart is overwhelmed." Below is a prayer for the first minute, a longer prayer for when you can sit for ten, prayers for the usual kinds of overwhelm (work, home, caring, the news, everything at once), and a simple way to sort your load with God so you know what to pick up and what to put down.

A 60-second prayer for when it all hits at once

Stop what you're doing. Put both feet on the floor. Take one slow breath, then pray:

Lord, I'm overwhelmed. My heart is racing and my mind won't stop. You are bigger than all of this. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Show me the one next thing to do, and help me leave the rest with you for now. Amen.

Then do only that one next thing. You don't have to solve the whole pile in this minute. You only have to take one step while trusting God with the rest.

What the Bible says about feeling overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed isn't a modern problem or a sign of weak faith. The Bible names it and shows people of deep faith living through it.

Three things stand out. Overwhelm is human. God's answer often includes rest and other people, not just more effort. And the right first move is to call out to him, honestly.

How to pray when you're overwhelmed: a 10-minute "unloading" prayer

When you can sit for ten minutes, this works better than a general "help me." You'll need a piece of paper or a notes app.

  1. Be still (1 minute). Read Psalm 46:10 out loud: "Be still, and know that I am God." Breathe slowly. Ask God to meet you here.
  2. Empty the pile (3 minutes). Write down everything that's pressing on you, big and small, as fast as you can: the deadline, the dentist, the argument, the laundry, the diagnosis, the email you're avoiding. Don't sort. Just get it out of your head.
  3. Hand it over, item by item (3 minutes). Read each line to God. "Lord, this is on me." For each, say one short sentence: "I give you this." This is what 1 Peter 5:7 means: "casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you" (WEB).
  4. Sort it with him (2 minutes). Mark each item with one letter, asking God for wisdom as you go (the table below explains each):
    • T = today (only you can do it, and it can't wait)
    • L = later (it matters, but not this week)
    • A = ask (someone else could help or do it)
    • G = God's (you can't control it at all: other people's choices, results, the future)
  5. Close with trust (1 minute). Pray Philippians 4:6-7 back to God: "I've made my requests known to you. Now let your peace, which surpasses understanding, guard my heart and my thoughts in Christ Jesus. Amen."

Then do the first T item. Most people find their T list is far shorter than the knot in their stomach suggested.

Sorting the load: what's yours, what's God's

Much of the weight of overwhelm comes from carrying things that were never ours to carry, or carrying next month's things today. This table helps when you pray through your list.

LetterWhat it meansWhat to prayBible behind it
T (today)Only you can do it, and it's due now"Give me strength and focus for this, today"Matthew 6:11, daily bread
L (later)It matters but can wait a week or more"Help me let this wait without guilt"Matthew 6:34, "don't be anxious for tomorrow"
A (ask)Someone else could help, share or do it"Give me the humility to ask, and show me who"Exodus 18:18, "you are not able to perform it yourself alone"
G (God's)Outside your control: outcomes, people's choices, the future"This is yours. I leave it with you"Psalm 55:22, "Cast your burden on Yahweh"

Some items will move between letters. That's fine. The point isn't a perfect list; it's to stop treating everything as T.

Prayers for different kinds of overwhelm

Overwhelmed by work

Lord, there's more on my desk than hours in the day, and I feel behind before I start. Help me see what truly matters today and do it well. Give me courage to say no where I should, and to ask for help where I need it. Remind me that my worth isn't my output. When I finish today, help me stop, and rest. Amen.

Verse to keep: "It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones" (Psalm 127:2, WEB).

Overwhelmed as a parent

Father, the children need me every minute and I have nothing left. Forgive me for snapping. Give me patience for the next hour, not the whole day. Help me see them the way you see them, and see myself the way you see me: loved, not failing. Send me a moment of quiet today. Amen.

If you pray for your children by name, our guide to praying for your children has a simple weekly plan.

Overwhelmed caring for someone

Lord, I'm caring for someone I love and it's taking all of me. Thank you that I can be here for them. Give me strength for the appointments, the nights and the decisions. Show me who could share this, and help me accept it. Keep my love from turning into resentment. Amen.

Overwhelmed by bills and money

God, I keep doing the numbers and they don't work. I'm scared. You know what we need before we ask. Help me take one wise step today: one call, one cut, one honest conversation. Provide for us, and keep fear from running my house. Amen.

Overwhelmed by the news and the world

Lord, the world feels like it's on fire and I can't fix any of it. I bring you the places and people I've read about today. Have mercy. Show me the small part that's mine to do, and help me put down my phone and do it. You are still on the throne. Amen.

Overwhelmed by emotions you can't name

Lord, I don't even know what I'm feeling. It's just heavy. You search my heart and know me. Your Spirit prays for me with groanings that can't be put into words. Let that be my prayer right now. Amen.

This prayer leans on Romans 8:26: "the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can't be uttered" (WEB). If words are hard more often than not, see how to pray when you don't know what to say.

Overwhelmed by everything at once

Father, it's not one thing, it's all of it. I can't hold it together. I'm putting it all at your feet. Lead me to the rock higher than I. Give me one next step, and enough grace for that step. I'll trust you with the rest. Amen.

Short prayers to pray through the day

Overwhelm doesn't wait for your quiet time. Keep a few one-line prayers ready for the moment it rises:

Prayed slowly with your breathing, these become breath prayers. Our breath prayers guide shows how, with forty more examples.

Why a daily prayer time helps before overwhelm hits

When prayer is already part of your day, turning to God in a crisis comes more naturally. A short daily time also lets you hand over small worries before they pile into a big one. You don't need an hour: ten minutes most mornings is enough to start. See how to have a consistent prayer life for a simple shape.

If organising that time is one more thing on the pile, let someone else do the organising. Our guided daily prayer reads a Psalm aloud and leads you through ten minutes, so all you do is press play: try day 1 free.

What overwhelm is not

When to talk to a doctor or counselor

Being overwhelmed now and then is part of life. Please talk to a doctor, licensed counselor or your pastor if:

Getting help is not a failure of prayer. It may be part of the answer to it.

Common questions

What is a short prayer when feeling overwhelmed?

"Lord, it's too much. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Show me the next step. Amen." It's built on Psalm 61:2.

What Psalm is good for feeling overwhelmed?

Psalm 61 and Psalm 142 both use the word overwhelmed. Psalm 46 ("God is our refuge and strength") and Psalm 23 are also good to read slowly when everything feels like too much.

Is feeling overwhelmed a sin?

No. It's a human feeling the Bible's own writers describe. What matters is what you do with it: bring it to God, rest, and ask for help.

How do I pray when I'm too overwhelmed to focus?

Use one short line and repeat it, or read a Psalm out loud and let it be your prayer. Writing your worries down and reading them to God also helps a scattered mind.

What did Jesus do when he was overwhelmed?

He went away to pray, asked close friends to stay with him, and told God exactly what he wanted while trusting God's will (Matthew 26:36-44). He also took his disciples away to rest (Mark 6:31).
